How are Emotional Eating and Food Addiction Related?
Do you find yourself turning to food when you’re feeling down or stressed? Emotional eating can be a common coping mechanism, but it can also be a sign of food addiction. Understanding the relationship between emotional eating and food addiction can help you recognize when it’s time to seek help. Here’s what you need to know:
Signs of Food Addiction
- Eating even when you’re not hungry
- Eating until you feel sick
- Feeling guilty or ashamed after eating
- Hiding food or eating in secret
- Feeling like you can’t control your eating
- Feeling like you need certain foods to function or feel good.
How to Become Free of Food Addiction/Emotional Eating
Breaking free from food addiction or emotional eating can be a difficult process, but it’s not impossible. Here are some tips to help you get started:
1. Identify your triggers. What situations or emotions tend to trigger your cravings or binges? Understanding your triggers can help you prepare for them and find healthier ways to cope.
2. Practice mindfulness. Mindfulness techniques, like deep breathing and meditation, can help you become more aware of your thoughts and feelings and reduce stress and anxiety.
3. Seek support. Talking to a therapist, joining a support group like Food Addicts Anonymous, or working with a nutritionist or dietitian can all be helpful in managing food addiction or emotional eating.
4. Develop healthy habits. Eating a balanced diet, getting regular exercise, and getting enough sleep can all help reduce cravings and improve your mood and overall health.
5. Don’t buy junk. If you are like me, the night time is my trigger period to EAT. I realized it is A LOT easier if I don’t have the food in my house in the first place.
6. Don’t Start. Food addicts are a lot like alcoholics in that we usually can’t stop at 1 cookie. I know some people who break their candy bars in half to have them later, but that has NEVER been something I can or want to do. I’m usually looking for the next thing to eat after that candy bar! Just don’t start even with 1 bite.
7. Find Replacements. Right before I go to bed I ALWAYS want to binge eat. It is a habit I created, and it usually spirals downward from there. I have learned that a little glass of Chocolate milk does the trick, maybe for you it’s honey with tea, or a glass of yummy infused water, whatever it is, you will thank yourself in the morning!
